WCMM Fellow Paul Bourgine has been awarded the prestigious ERC Consolidator Grant to further study immunotherapies in cancer treatment.
Advancing the Understanding of Immune Regulation in Bone Marrow
Bourgine’s ERC-funded project, ImmunhOss, is founded on the hypothesis that the human bone marrow plays a central role in controlling inflammation and immunosuppression. The specific cellular players, their organization and their potential dual functions remain largely unknown.
The project will develop human bone marrow models designed to uncover the tissue’s immunoregulatory functions. The research aims to identify the presence of immune niches, determine whether these structures regulate immune cells and affect immunotherapy outcomes and explore whether these niches can be reprogrammed to enhance therapeutic efficacy.
Strategic Impact of ERC Funding
The ERC Consolidator Grant will facilitate the recruitment of additional researchers to expand the group’s capabilities. It will also support extensive experimental work, including multi-omics analyses and spatial profiling, which are essential for dissecting the complexity of bone marrow immunobiology.
A Major Milestone for Bourgine and WCMM
Receiving an ERC Consolidator Grant represents a significant marker of scientific excellence. For Bourgine, the award reinforces the strength of his research program as it moves into new interdisciplinary territory at the intersection of stem cell biology, tissue engineering, immunology and cancer therapy. The grant also amplifies the visibility and credibility of this innovative approach within the broader scientific community.
Supported by ERC funding, ImmunhOss has the potential to deliver transformative insights into how bone marrow niches influence immune responses and how these environments might be therapeutically targeted to improve cancer treatment outcomes.
WCMM Lund warmly congratulates Paul Bourgine on this outstanding achievement and looks forward to the advances his research will bring to precision immunotherapy and regenerative medicine.
