WCMM & DDLS Leadership Seminar Series: Exploring Innovation

Silutter av människor som vandrar nerför en kulle

We’re excited to share highlights from the latest edition of the WCMM & DDLS Leadership Seminar Series, an initiative designed to empower our WCMM PIs with leadership skills essential for shaping the future of science.

These seminars have focused on leadership at higher levels of decision-making, a crucial dimension for those looking to influence policy, funding priorities, and strategic research directions. Through engaging talks and interactive sessions, participants have explored key questions such as Who decides? Where does the funding come from? How can you influence the process? How can you get engaged?

Spotlight on Innovation

For the latest session, we were honoured to welcome experts from LU Innovation, who provided valuable insights into Sweden’s innovation ecosystem, with a special focus on life sciences. Their talks covered a range of topics essential for navigating innovation in research:

  • Innovation support at Lund University | Cecilia Jädert, Innovation Developer, LUI
  • The teacher exemption and contractual relations | Fredrik Engfeldt, Legal Advisor, LUI
  • The patent process and freedom to operate | Per Mercke, Patent Advisor, LUI
  • Swedish innovation system in Life Sciences | Peter Nordström, Programme Manager, Swelife

Interactive Case Work

The seminar also featured a hands-on case presentation, encouraging participants to work in groups to tackle real-world challenges. Teams discussed objectives, identified issues, and proposed strategic approaches—followed by a lively group discussion and Q&A session.

This session served as a great platform to reflect on how innovation and leadership intersect, and how researchers can take an active role in shaping both science and society.

Stay tuned for the next session in the series!
