Two leading scientists from WCMM Lund, Paul Bourgine and Niklas Mattsson-Carlgren, have achieved an exceptional milestone, each receiving two major grants from the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet) in the 2025 Medicine and Health call.
This double success represents a rare and outstanding achievement, underscoring the scientific excellence and societal relevance of WCMM’s research community.
- Paul Bourgine was awarded a Consolidator Grant of 10 million SEK over five years, as well as a Project Grant of 8.5 million SEK for the same period. His research focuses on personalized cellular immunotherapy, using engineered human “mini bone” tissues to model immune-tissue interactions and optimize new therapeutic strategies.
- Niklas Mattsson-Carlgren received a Consolidator Grant of 10 million SEK (5 years) and a Project Grant of 5.4 million SEK (4 years). His work aims to identify and predict pre-symptomatic Alzheimer’s disease through blood-based biomarkers — a critical step toward earlier diagnosis and more effective intervention in neurodegenerative disease.
Securing one major grant from the Swedish Research Council is a notable accomplishment; earning two in the same round is truly extraordinary. With overall success rates often below 20%, these awards reflect not only the high quality and innovation of their research but also its potential to deliver transformative impact in medicine and health.
“This double success highlights the strength of WCMM’s interdisciplinary approach — combining cutting-edge molecular medicine with clinical insight to address major health challenges,” says Prof Gunilla Westergren-Thorsson, WCMM Lund Director.
