This year Prince Daniel's grant for particularly promising young researchers was awarded WCMM researcher Andreas Edsfeldt for his research on atherosclerosis in type 2 diabetes.

The Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation wishes to foster the next generation of young researchers. One way in which it does this is by awarding grants to particularly promising young researchers.

Andreas Edsfeldt, associate professor at Lund University and physician at the Heart clinic Skåne University Hospital in Malmö, received 6 MSEK The Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation. The grant was handed over by Prince Daniel and Kristina Sparreljung, Secretary General, Heart-Lung Foundation at an event at the Oscar Theater in Stockholm on October 20, 2022.

Patients suffering from type 2 diabetes have a higher risk to suffer from cardiovascular events due to an accelerated atherosclerosis. The overall aim of Andreas Edsfeldt’s research is to develop new treatments that prevent heart attacks and strokes for people living with type 2 diabetes. His team provided evidence for an impaired tissue repair as a potential cause of the accelerated atherosclerotic disease. This grant is important to be able to continue the work to identify mechanisms underlying the impaired tissue repair which could be targeted therapeutically. In order to do so, the group are using novel sequencing and in vitro settings together with data from large clinical cohorts.
