Rafi Sheikh joins WCMM Lund as Clinical Researcher

Porträtt Rafi Sheikh

With a deep interest in the mysteries of the eye, Rafi Sheikh joins WCMM Lund as a new WCMM Clinical Researcher. His four-year position combines 50% research with 50% clinical work, creating an opportunity to bring clinical questions directly into his research.

Combining clinical expertise with advanced optical imaging

Combining his clinical expertise in ophthalmology with advanced optical imaging, Rafi aims to develop new tools for the earlier and more precise diagnosis of sight-threatening eye diseases.

We are pleased to welcome Rafi Sheikh to WCMM Lund. He is Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at Lund University and Senior Consultant at Skåne University Hospital, where he specialises in cataract and vitreoretinal surgery.

His research brings together clinical ophthalmology, optical imaging, physics, engineering and data analysis to develop new technologies with potential for clinical translation.

Research focus

Rafi’s research group focuses on hyperspectral imaging of the retina, an advanced imaging technique that captures both spatial and spectral information from ocular tissues. This approach can provide information about tissue characteristics, vascular changes and oxygenation that is not available through conventional retinal imaging.

A major focus is the early detection and monitoring of diabetic retinopathy. The group aims to identify non-invasive optical biomarkers that could reveal retinal and vascular changes before visible structural damage occurs.

The research also explores hyperspectral imaging for conditions including age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma and periocular diseases. By combining spectral analysis, machine learning and multimodal imaging, the group aims to develop new tools for improved disease detection, staging and longitudinal monitoring.
